Working as a teacher in the UK, there are certain criteria that you must satisfy.  It is not enough in many cases just to have a passport from your own country. You will often require a visa to let you live and work in the UK for a pre-arranged length of time.

  • Right To Work / VISA
  • Wages / Pensions
  • Tax / NI
  • UK Qualified Teacher Status

Useful Information

Most schools start their day at 9:00 am and end at 3:30 pm.  It is not unusual for secondary schools to start earlier at 08:30 am, there are normally 2 breaks throughout the day (10:30 – 10:45 & 1 hour for lunch at 12:30 – 1:30 pm).  As a full time employed teacher or a supply teacher you may be requested to assist the supervision of pupils during these breaks.

Generally a lot of schools have their own ideas regarding lesson preparation times, staff meetings, parent meetings and after school activities.  As a supply / contract teacher you may be required to also assist in the school educational activities as a gesture of being part of the school’s teaching community.  We would always relay what is required prior to starting the position.

All schools in the UK are separated by 3 terms in each academic year.  Autumn Term (September – December), Spring Term (December – April), Summer Term (April – July).  Every term is divided into 2, with a 1 week break in the middle, which is known as Half Term.

Christmas holidays are normally 2 weeks long and run from a few days before Christmas, into the new year normally between the 2nd and the 5th of January.  Easter holidays normally run for 2 weeks and like most countries we have several bank holidays throughout the year.

We pride ourselves on supporting our supply workforce & assisting teachers relocating or just settling into a new environment.  There are times when you will require advice.  If you have a working environment issue, if you are employed in a permanent capacity or in long term supply position, normally the first point of contact would be your reporting manager but we are always here to support you.

Rikama Education runs a payroll weekly or monthly for our supply / contract workforce.  If we place you permanently the school will pay you directly into your bank account on a monthly basis.  You will be required to send your completed and authorised timesheets to us on a weekly basis if paid weekly, and once a month if you wish to be paid monthly.  It is important that we receive your timesheets prior to cut-off which will be outlined in our welcome pack once we have secured you an opportunity.

Many schools in the UK rely on teaching recruitment agencies like us to source suitable teachers for them.  We are well placed to assist you in securing the perfect career opportunity or contract due to our extensive list of schools that come to us regularly.  Rikama are able to save you many hours of research and job searching as we are specialists in our education sector and, after speaking with you will know the ideal school environment & location for you.

We supply long term cover positions that normally arise from long term absence, maternity cover or for unexpected leavers.  We work with many schools and will negotiate a market daily rate for supply. For permanent placements the school will know your pay scale, based on your teaching experience & qualifications.  Working with us will not cost you any money as the school will pay us either your rate plus a management cost to pay role you and arrange your tax.  If we place you permanently it is in our interest to negotiate the best salary banding as we receive a finders fee based on salary.

Registering with an agency is a simple process that can be completed ideally face to face or alternatively via the internet & Skype.  You will be required to undertake a competency based interview with one of our consultants & we will be required to undertake professional references.  Another fundamental part of our process is compliance

You living expenses can vary a lot depending on where you decide to live and your level of accommodation.  Most overseas teachers will need to rent your accommodation and it is normal practice for the landlord or rental agency to require a deposit of between 4 to 6 weeks rent.  Rent deposits are only holding deposits and you should receive back from the landlord on satisfactory hand-over of your accommodation.  Many of our teachers tend to share accommodation to reduce their living costs & as this also provides a homely environment.  It is important you factor this into your decision making as you will be required to have significant savings on arrival.  This will enable you to live comfortably until your first payment from us or the school.

Utilities
£50 – £100 per month.
You may also be required to pay utility bills (Gas / Electricity / Water) depending on your choice of accommodation.

Council Tax
£45 – £60 per month.
This is a tax that is paid to the local government.  Once again this will vary depending on your desired accommodation, and the size of the property.  If you decide to share an accommodation or rent a room then this is my far the most cost effective solution.

Food & Drink
£200 – £250 per month.
Once again depending on your style of living this can vary greatly, one of the benefits of house sharing is that all of the tenants would normally contribute to living essentials.

Mobile Telephone
£20 – £40 per month.
Depending on how much time you spend on your phone, we recommend that you join one of the service providers that offer cheap overseas call packaged, or purchase phone cards.

Please remember the general baggage allowance with most airlines is 20kg – 25kg which equates to 1 large fully laden suitcase.  It is very expensive to pay for an additional luggage allowance, so it may be beneficial and cheaper to bring only your absolute essentials.  We highly recommend that you check your baggage allowance prior to traveling.

Your entitlement to free NHS (National Health Service) treatment depends on the length and purpose of your residence in the UK, not your nationality. You might be charged for some NHS services, for example, your dental treatment, though you could be entitled to help with these charges. Any free NHS treatment you receive, or any help with NHS costs, does not affect your immigration status.

If you are entitled to it, you can obtain free treatment immediately. There is no qualifying period.

To find out if you can get free hospital treatment, see information for those visiting or moving to England on the NHS Choices website.

It’s up to the GP or dentist whether they accept you onto their list of NHS patients.

There are some exceptions to these rules though, for example if you need emergency treatment.

A patient doesn’t need to be “ordinarily resident” in the country to be eligible for NHS primary medical care – this only applies to secondary (hospital) care.

A GP practice may be flexible in deciding whether to accept you as a registered patient and if you are visiting the UK for less than 3 months, they may accept you as a temporary resident. However there are certain services you may have to pay a fee for. Your residency status is not a determining factor in whether or not to accept you as a registered patient.

If you’re visiting the UK from the EEA, you should present a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when attending a GP practice, so they can recover the costs of your treatment from your home country.

If you have difficulty finding a GP or a dentist who is prepared to register you, contact NHS England. You can also get help to find a doctor from the NHS 111 service.

Even if you are accepted onto a GP or dentist’s list of NHS patients, you have to pay charges for some things like prescription charges and dental treatment.

For more information about charges and the help you might get to pay for them, see Help with health costs.

It is highly recommended that you check with your current bank in your home country to see if they have branches or affiliated banks here in the UK.  You may be able to use the same bank account and arrange a ATM card from your home country.  If your bank has an affiliated bank in the UK, then you will be able to setup an account from home.  You may be required to transfer a sum of money in GBP into your new bank account.  You may be charged a small setup fee.  Alternatively you can apply to open an account with a global bank such as HSBC whom have a global network of branches.  The most cost effective way of setting up an account here in the UK is to do so when you arrive.

Please remember when setting up a UK bank account you will be required to provide proof of identity (passport) and address, which normally consists of bringing a utility bill showing your home address.  You may also be required to produce previous bank statements and a reference letter from your home bank.

Schools in the UK are commonly divided into Key Stages:

Foundation Stage / Pre-School (non – compulsory)

Primary School

  • Key Stage 1  (4-7 Year Olds)
  • Key Stage 2  (7-11 Year Olds)

Secondary School

  • Key Stage 3  (11-14 Year Olds)
  • Key Stage 4  (14-16 Year Olds)
  • Key Stage 5  (16-18 Year Olds)

Students may choose to continue into further education (FE) and higher education (HE).

Here in the UK we have a mixture of school types.

State schools & academies
State schools & academies are funded by the UK government and follow the UK curriculum.  Secondary state schools & academies are generally mixed gender coeducational or single sex.  Grammar schools are also run by the government but students will be required to pass entrance exams and pupils are admitted on the basis of ability.

Religion based schools
We have a large number of schools that are affiliated with certain religions, such as Church of England & Catholic schools, which are open to the general public and follow the UK curriculum.

Independent / Private schools
Students attending these schools are required to pay tuition fees.  These schools are not required to follow the UK curriculum but have the flexibility to do so if they wish.

It is common practice for many teachers to send money home.  There are several money transfer companies available, such as PayPal, Western Union, Skrill and MoneyGram.  These are some of the more reliable and the safest options for transferring UK pounds back home.  It is advisable to check their transfer fees and exchange rates, as they may vary daily.

Common travel links in the UK are trains, buses & tubes in central London.  The UK has a developed and reliable means of transport depending on where you decide to work.  Many overseas teachers do not purchase a car in this country so it is important that you understand the UK travel network & that you will be able to commute to your place of work and places of interest with ease.

Teachers seeking work in rural areas may find a car delivers more flexibility and freedom due to more limited transport links.

Many UK schools have a diverse multicultural staffroom.  Students are accustomed to being taught by teachers from a variety of cultures and countries.  From our experience international teachers initially find teaching in the UK demanding, lesson planning can be challenging and time consuming initially.  However, the majority of teachers trained outside of the UK find the UK curriculum fairly straightforward & are able to get up to speed after the first few weeks.

Here at Rikama we are always happy to assist with providing the relevant curriculum information, so that you may adequately prepare prior to starting your new role.

UK tax and National Insurance will be deducted directly from your weekly or monthly pay. This is termed PAYE (Pay As You Earn).

The current basic rate of tax is 20%.

Most employees will be entitled to a Personal Tax Allowance, which changes on a year to year basis.

This allowance is not given all at once, but spread over the 52 weeks of the tax year. After the taxable allowance, any remainder is taxed at 20%.

National Insurance contributions will also be deducted from your salary. Altogether, you will pay approximately 30% of your salary in tax and National Insurance contributions.
