A quarter of educators in England work more than 60 hours per week, far more than their counterparts across the world. The government has tried to reduce workload over the last 5 years using several initiatives and although some teachers have stated their work has decreased, the amount of time they are spending teaching and preparing has stayed the same.
Researchers have found that teachers in England can work up to 47 hours per week during term time completing administration, preparing for lessons, class teaching and marking. During the summer term, this time can go well above 50 hours as teachers prepare for exam season.
Worrying Numbers for Secondary Teachers
This study released by the UCL Institute of Education, found that two out of five teachers commonly work in the evenings and one in ten at the weekend. Worryingly, secondary school teachers have said that time marking, management and administration takes up exactly half of their week alongside teaching (20 hours on each).
