Schools running after-school activities in either the evenings or weekends could help keep young people safe from knife crime. Reports have shown that young people are more likely to be stabbed or attacked on their way home from school (according to British Medical Journal). Several establishments have acted from these findings offering free early evening activities to prevent students all hitting the streets at the same time; most of these classes take place between 4pm-7pm. If this helps with knife crime or violence, then perhaps more schools should follow suit?
London South East Colleges has excelled in this, offering a wide range of activities for all young people to get involved in such as boxing, dance, music production, football and singing to name a few. Hopefully by offering such a wide range of activities will increase the traffic of pupils taking part hence lowering the risk of violence.
The main issue that this presents is funding, colleges and schools will need additional funding to be able to pay the teachers and venues to host such events. We will all keep our fingers crossed that Brexit is a smooth transition, then additional funding will be available for schools in Britain, as Philip Hammond has stated on several occasions.
