Labour to End Academies

The annual Labour Party conference occurred at the weekend in Brighton to discuss motions that would come into fruition if Labour were to come to power. In education, Labour delegates has passed a proposal to end the era of academies and multi-academy trusts. With this, the motion proposes to bring all publicly funded schools under the control of a single ‘education committee’ until their local authority.

End of Academy Era

The motions call for Labour to: Ensure local authorities establish reform with accountable local education committees, stopping all schools becoming academies, opening new free schools and ridding current academies. Ensuring all publicly funded schools to be brought under the control of education committees and finally, the newly empowered education committees must be appropriately funded.

Although this may seem like a good idea to some, is it really? It will only work if appropriate funding is given to every education committee; of which Labour have not stipulated how much each local authority would be receiving. Would this idea also help recruitment in schools? MAT’s can offer higher pay then most and offer recruitment bonuses.
